Hey, I'm Jason.

My work centers on the natural beauty of the Upper Peninsula and the quiet, often overlooked moments that connect people to place.

I came to photography through an unexpected path. Growing up in a small town in Pennsylvania, I spent my early years drawn to reading, music, and sports before eventually settling in the U.P. after following love north. A decade in social work - specifically leading homeless response systems across northern Michigan - shaped the way I see the world. I look for dignity and beauty in ordinary places. That lens carries directly into my photography.

My creative life ignited through local theatre in 2016. Performing sparked something in me, a pull toward expression and belonging that eventually led me outdoors with a camera. I started photographing my city on a phone, trying to hold onto what I was seeing. By 2020 I was studying iPhone photography formally. By 2021 I had a DSLR and a clear direction.

I work full time as a photographer, with a focus on fine art, landscape, nature, and candid documentary work. My images are permanently featured at The Gallery Marquette, have been exhibited across Michigan, and published in multiple literary and arts journals. I also maintain a newsletter at thejasondean.beehiiv.com, where I share photography, poetry, and personal writing.

My approach is straightforward. I focus on finding the extraordinary in ordinary places rather than chasing well-known landmarks or trending subjects. When my Lake Superior wave photography started getting lost in a crowded field, I didn't change subjects - I changed my angle, photographing waves in ways I wasn't seeing from anyone else. That instinct, staying true to a vision while finding less-traveled lanes, runs through everything I make.

I measure progress against myself, not against other photographers. Better today than yesterday is the standard. I build multiple review checkpoints into my editing workflow, staying self-critical without being self-defeating, because I know that social media feedback rarely tells you whether the work is actually good.
